CSR in the Solomon Islands

History of CSR:

A quick search reveals there is little to no CSR currently active in the Solomon Islands. Some activity has been seen via international companies, but otherwise CSR is almost non-existent.

Legal framework and Initiatives:

The Companies Act and Foreign Investment Act of 2009 do not once contain the words ‘CSR’, ‘environment’, ‘social’ or ‘responsibility’.

Key partners:

Huawei, who is also one of the only examples of good practice in the Solomon Islands, created a a 100,000 USD CSR fund for the Asia Pacific in 2010. As a part of this fund, a school in the Solomon Islands received 10,000 USD.

Good practice:

Russell Islands, Solomon Islands is a USD$135M project involving the rehabilitation of the coconut harvesting and production facility, replanting of plantations, upgrades to school, hospital, port and airfield to improve quality of life for the local communities through job creation. This is the first stage in a multiple phased approach to provide strong economic development to the region while being supportive of the local tribes, environment and social understandings.
